Inventory

One of the most distinctive traits of metal fabrication companies is the method used to manage inventory. It is in this area that current ERP products fail to properly meet their needs

Plates

With existing ERP packages, companies are faced with cumbersome workarounds to support materials such as plates and sheets. Tavis Manufacturing allows you to define a part code for each grade and thickness, but still track all sizes of plate. In addition, Tavis Manufacturing provides the necessary heat number tracking to determine the job on which a plate was used.

Bars and Angles

Where individual piece tracking is unnecessary, a method called Standard Size Tracking can be used. This is often appropriate for bars, angles, rods and sheets.

Each part can be related to a subset of standard sizes. This technique is simpler but less rigorous than the plate tracking method. The value of the material and the level of detail/monitoring required will influence the choice of approach.

The rest.

In addition to these specialized types of inventory, metal fabricators also require standard inventory items such as nuts, bolts, and motors, where a simple stock quantity is sufficient. All parts support minimum stock levels and reorder quantities to enable shortage reporting. A Projected Quantities screen allows future work order requirements and outstanding purchase orders to be considered while evaluating future needs

Remnants and By-Products

When cutting material, there are often valuable drops. Remnants allow a portion of the originally issued piece to be returned to inventory. By-Products allow material to be returned to inventory using a different part code

Inventory Transactions

All inventory values are calculated dynamically based on transaction information. This allows transactions to be recorded out of order and it allows historical reports to be generated even after later transactions have occurred

Reports

In addition to on screen queries such as Projected Quantities and Purchase History, there are numerous inventory reports, including the Inventory Movement report which summarizes all inventory transactions by part during a specified period. The Inventory Value report can show the on-hand value for any historical date. The Available Lots report is especially useful for determining if there are useful remnants in stock.
